"HOW TO" PROCESS
(Majority of the information below was attained from the USDA Website. Although this product is NOT for human consumption, it must be treated it as such, since it is fed in our kitchens and shares space with foods in our refrigerator. Food Safety is Very Important!)
1) DEFROST – When defrosting frozen foods (according to the USDA), it is best to plan ahead and thaw food in the refrigerator where food will remain at a safe, constant temperature - 40 °F or below. Even though our furry friends are not as sensitive as we are, we can't stress enough how important it is to follow the USDA guidelines, as we are defrosting this product in our own kitchens. Below are two safe methods to defrost food; in the refrigerator and in cold water.
Refrigerator Defrosting - Planning ahead is the key to this method because of the lengthy time involved. A large frozen item like a turkey requires at least a day (24 hours) for every 5 pounds of weight. Even small amounts of frozen food, such as a pound of ground meat or boneless chicken breasts require a full day to thaw.
Cold Water Defrosting - This method is faster than refrigerator thawing but requires more attention. The container should be submerged in cold tap water, changing the water every 30 minutes so it continues to thaw. Small packages of meat or poultry, about a pound, may defrost in an hour or less. A 3 pound container may take 2 to 3 hours.
2) PORTION – A correct portion is different for each individual canine. For most, it lies somewhere between 2-3% of your fur babies ideal body weight. You must take into consideration factors such as age, metabolism rate, exercise level, etc. If you are not sure, please feel free to ask us.
3) FEED - As with any diet, you must find a place in your home where your furry child can eat their food comfortably. Real Roar Grinds are very easy and convenient to feed and are licked up from the bowl in seconds. Whole Meats, on the other hand, tend to be pulled out of the bowl and eaten on whatever surface the bowl is placed. It is very important that the area you find, can be easily cleaned with animal safe products. An example of excellent surfaces would be tile, linoleum or concrete. Many choose to feed Whole Meats outside or in the kitchen area. Some choose to dedicate a towel or a rag for feeding.
4) CLEAN UP – Although there are many formulas on the market that are animal safe, we suggest you use white distilled vinegar. White distilled vinegar is a popular household cleanser, effective for killing most mold, bacteria, and germs, due to its level of acidity. Cleaning with white distilled vinegar is a smart way to avoid using harsh chemicals. You’ll also be glad to know that it is environmentally friendly and very economical.
5) STORE - Always refrigerate perishable food within 2 hours (1 hour when the temperature is above 90 °F). Check the temperature of your refrigerator and freezer with an appliance thermometer. The refrigerator should be at 40 °F or below and the freezer at 0 °F or below. Freeze fresh poultry, fish, ground meats, and variety meats within 2 days; other beef, veal, lamb, or pork, within 3 to 5 days. Perishable food such as meat and poultry should be wrapped securely to maintain quality and to prevent meat juices from getting onto other foods.
